REPORT ON SPRING EXCUSE 2008

The Spring Excuse kicks off the Club’s social sailing programme in Home Waters each year. It aims to combine elements of cruising and racing, for young and old alike.
The cruising side began in correct fashion with a dinner at Gins on the beautiful Beaulieu. Crews from half a dozen yachts, led in size by Ross Witherow’s Fluenta and John Mcmonigall’s Saba, were joined by members from Lymington and Beaulieu. It was a particular pleasure to be greeted by a gum-booted Ted Fort who had walked over from his lovely house.
Saturday’s schedule was for a late start to catch the 2.0pm tidal gate at Hurst. The Saba gang set off early but, in true hare & tortoise style, stopped for a lengthy lunch off Hurst beach (to be the scene of the Club picnic in August). Light westerly winds made for a relaxed sail across Christchurch Bay to Poole. Once there, racers and cruisers mingled for an excellent buffet dinner at the delightful little Dorset Lake club, organised as usual by the indefatigable LastMinuteMonty.
Sunday opened up with thunder rumbling and crashing over the Purbeck hills, a tad noisy for some who had enjoyed the night before too much. Although the rain soon stopped, so did the wind. Fortunately the CSO had chosen his dates wisely, and a steady tide helped us smoothly back to the Solent by mid afternoon. Healthy glowing cheeks and noses on Monday were a reminder that the sun does indeed shine on the UK sometimes, provided one is out on the water!
